The History of the Club

Ockbrook & Borrowash Tennis Club has been a local tennis club for over 100 years, having been formed back in 1919 to provide a recreation facility for soldiers arriving back from the 1914-1918 Great War. Like most tennis clubs of that time, the surface that these war time heros played on back then was grass. Over more recent years, the club has been transitioned from grass to provide more hard wearing surfaces, so that play can be enjoyed all year round and through all types of weather conditions.

The Current Day

The Ockbrook & Borrowash Tennis Club has been a local tennis club for over 100 years and was founded back in 1919 to provide a recreational facility for soldiers returning from the First World War (1914-1918). As with most tennis clubs of the time, the surface on which these war heroes played was grass. In recent years the club has transitioned from grass to more durable surfaces, allowing the game to be enjoyed all year round and in all weather conditions.

The club's mission statement is, ‘We aim to provide a good standard of tennis facilities and coaching services to the local community in which we are based. We aim to develop and encourage players of all ages, genders, and abilities’.

We offer adult and junior tennis to the local community and now have over 300 members (adults and junior) of varying ability levels. We have 3 men's, 3 women's and 3 mixed teams playing in the Derby Area Summer and we have 1 men's, 2 women's and 2 mixed teams playing in the Derby Winter Leagues. We also have 1 men's, 1 women's and 1 mixed team playing in the Nottinghamshire Winter League as well as a number of junior teams that compete in both the summer and winter months.

The club offers junior coaching with our head coach James Middleton every Saturday from 9am to 1pm and Sundays from 9am to 1pm with Gary Edwards.

Visitors are welcome and can book a place via the ‘Booking Page’. The cost for a court is £5.00 per half hour (minimum 1 hour). However, to be fair to members, visits are limited to three per year.

We recently refurbished two of our dilapidated courts thanks to several grants. The biggest supporter has been Derbyshire County Council, for which we are extremely grateful. Without their support this would not have been possible.

The Future

We are currently working with immediate neighbours towards our long-term goal of installing permanent floodlights, so that player development and opportunities can continue during the winter months in the same way that other club’s benefit. We hope that the immediate neighbours and Erewash Borough Council will support this so that our local community is not disadvantaged, and we can provide a venue with first class facilities for all of our residents to enjoy.

Our Partners

We really appreciate supporting the following organisations, so please support them in return. If your company would be interested in sponsoring our club, please contact us via the 'Contact Us' page.
